27th Long Course Championships
held at the N. A. Smit Swimming
Pool in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape
from the 16th to the 19th of March 2011
356 swimmers (175 women and 181 men) from 21 clubs entered, of whom 1 was a foreign swimmer
from the UK.
341 swimmers eventually competed.
319 swimmers scored points for their club in individual races.
261 relay teams were entered.
There were 5 swimmers entered who were 80 years and older.
The oldest female competitor was
Rae Smit (91).
The oldest male competitor was Ted Beukes (81).
RECORDS
4 World Records were broken by 3 different
swimmers in the individual events.
Cecilia Stanford (400IM & 200IM),
Sanderina Kruger (50FS) & Edith Ottermann (50FS).
1 World Record was broken by 1 club in the
relay events.
Cape Town 4x50FS 200-239 (Sanderina Kruger, Cecilia
Stanford, Marcelle Strauss, Edith Ottermann).
45 South African
Records were broken by 19 different swimmers in the individual events.
3 swimmers broke 5 SA records out of their 6 events (Elsa Craig, Beth Lordan
& Cecilia Stanford).
6 South African Records were broken by 4 different clubs in the relay events.
In addition 2 second place relay teams also bettered the old South African Record.
COLOURS
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 52 times by 18 different South African Swimmers during the championships.
24 swimmers (16 women & 8 men) who qualified throughout the 2010/2011 season were awarded their Colours.
1 swimmer who had qualified on time in previous years and had now competed in his 3rd championships was awarded his Colours.
In addition there were 4 swimmers who qualified on time in the 2010/2011 season but have yet to participate in 3 national long course championships.

In the 50m Butterfly (Event 18) Edith Ottermann (Cape Town MSC) bettered the 45-49 World Record (29.12) as published in the FINA Nov 2010 publication with a time of 29.01. However she has a faster time (28.97) awaiting publishing in the FINA May 2011 publication.
In the 50m Freestyle Dash-for-Cash (Event 39) Cecilia Stanford (Cape Town MSC) bettered the 50-54 South African Record (29.93) with a time of 29.75. However she had posted a faster time (29.44) in Event 3.
In the 50m Freestyle Dash-for-Cash (Event 41) Edith Ottermann (Cape Town MSC) bettered the 45-49 World Record (27.44) as published in the FINA Nov 2010 publication with a time of 27.11. However she has a time (27.12) awaiting publishing in the FINA May 2011 publication and she had also posted a faster time (26.59) in Event 3.
